The Beer Garden is proud to welcome the newest game server to it’s community of game servers, Xonotic. Xonotic is a free (GPL), fast-paced first-person shooter that works on Windows, OS X and Linux. The project is geared towards providing addictive arena shooter gameplay which is all spawned and driven by the community itself. Xonotic is a direct successor of the Nexuiz project with years of development between them, and it aims to become the best possible open-source FPS (first-person-shooter) of its kind.

The game is based off the Darkplaces game engine which is originally a quake modification, though it is now far more advanced over the course of many years of development. Because of the features of this engine, Xonotic has incredibly good graphics for an opensource game and is on par with most commercial games from 2006-2007. The gameplay is of course slightly inspired by several other games, but it is essentially a unique mixture of mostly original and different ideas which really makes the game stand out. It could be considered most similar to Unreal Tournament and Quake at its heart, especially regarding teamplay and game mechanics.

Looking at the in-game server browser there are allot of servers and very few players.  Hope that changes for the developers.  Fun game to play.  Reminds me of my Quake 3 days but with game play changes in all the right areas.

it is only version 0.5, i would expect it to take the nexuiz crowd actually.. I guess we'll wait and see, every time I hop on there a get some folks joining up.. however when I check the server browser I dont see anyone... I think it's one of those things where people will come if people are there.

It's really not expected to take all of the Nexuiz crowd until it hits 1.0 which if I have to take a guess (I've been tracking the game since the beginning) will probably be sometime late next year. There's still a lot of Nexuiz assetts in the game that need to be replaced, animations that need to be redone, etc. there's a lot of stuff the development team wants to get done before 1.0 which will be considered the first true release of the game by a lot of players.
